I wrote this project for The Sewing Directory, it was one of a series of no pattern dressmaking projects published last year, which are all still available on The Sewing Directory website. I made the original sample in Birch cotton poplin and lined it. It has undoubtedly been my most worn everyday dress since.
Around the same time I cut another one out in this gorgeous shaded blue silky polyester fabric bought from Fabric Godmother with every intention to make it shortly after. I remember at the time thinking this would literally be a 30 minute make because the fabric has a silky handle and was sufficiently heavy enough that I wouldn’t line it. The first lined version was pretty quick once the dimensions were worked out, so without a lining it is really only four seams a bit of bias and a hem!
However somehow it got buried in the pile of unfinished projects and remained unfinished until recently. As I have worn the other one so much I decided to dig it out and get this one made!
I think one of the reasons I didn’t get round to making it was because I wasn’t sure what leggings I would wear with it. My usual black leggings would probably be OK but I felt it needed something a bit more colourful. In the end I opted for red and white stripe cotton elastane. My kids love it because I call it my ‘Cat in the hat’ outfit!
If you fancy making one yourself you can find the instructions here. I would love to see your version if you do! 🙂
