I actually made this dress quite some time ago, it has been in my growing blog queue to write about. The pattern is a Threadcount pattern that came free with Sew Now magazine earlier last year. I am definitely having a bit of a love affair with Kimono inspired styles, when this pattern arrived I thought it looked both comfy and stylish. I also thought it would be the perfect style to make using the viscose/elastane jersey that I sell in my online fabric shop.
The fabric is beautifully dense but with a good drape. I stock this in several colours, I opted for one of my favorite colours, teal blue. Though the fabric is tightly knitted it feels fluid and light, I think it worked perfectly for this lovely cowl neckline.
I stitched the garment together with an overlocker set up with 4 threads so that there was no need to sew seams first with a sewing machine. I finished the hems with quite narrow double turned hems and a zig-zag stitch. I find some jersey fabrics are to bulky and bouncy to turn twice and can easily stretch and look misshapen if turned twice. This fabric stitched together like a dream and I am happy with the hems too.
The waistline is finished with elastic which is a nice and easy way to get a good fit and means the style can be pulled on with no need for a zip!
I decided to line the skirt with self fabric. I think the fabric is substantial enough to have been OK without lining (fear of vpl!) however the width is 160cm and allowed me to cut the lining out without the need for any more fabric. To make the lining I used the same skirt pattern and made two skirts which I applied together at the waist seam. I cut the lining a few centimetres shorter to ensure it didn’t hang below the outer layer. I simply overlocked the hem edge of the lining to avoid any seam lines showing through near the hem edge.
The dress was super quick to make, I really like the finished result. I have been having a funky leg phase so I decided to team it up with these burnt orange opaque tights for these photos however I have to confess I have only ever worn this dress with black tights 🙁
