Beautiful Handmade Jersey Harem Pants

These handmade jersey harem pants are a fabulous quick make and a really simple overlocker project.

The harem pants project started off as a request from one of my lovely customers. She owned a few pairs and wanted to make some more. She was happy to lend me her ready made ones so I decided to draft a pattern for them. Though her original pairs had been designed to wear for yoga and exercise she wanted to wear them for general everyday wear.

I think they make perfect everyday wear casually and even dressed up for going out in!

It was a good choice because since the pattern has been available in my sewing classes it has been used several times.  Always envied by me, so I decided to make a pair too.

They work really well in the Art Gallery knit fabrics. It’s so soft and stretchy that they are ridiculously comfortable to wear. The fabric is the perfect weight, it is light enough to drape nicely and the elastane content means they hold there shape around the knee and lower leg nicely.

Harem Pants for Every Season!

actually made these ahead of my holiday in July and nearly wore them out in the one week holiday. Worn here with my new favorite white thread-count shirt which I think  smartens them up a bit. I wore them with just about everything on holiday from t-shirts in warm weather to hoodies after the kids had gone to bed for sitting outside having a glass a vino.

Since this original design my customer has made several pairs and is now working on a new Autumn/Winter pair which are full length and she plans to wear with Ugg boots. A brilliant idea to carry these comfy harems into the cooler months.

I was about 6 or 7 years old when I had my first go on a sewing machine, it was an old hand crank machine that my mum used with her patients, she was an occupational therapist. I still vividly remember watching with amazement as the tiny perfectly formed stitches were created as I turned the handle. I Grew up in the 70’s and 80’s when buying clothes was less affordable and dressmaking was an answer to updating your wardrobe more regularly. My own mother was a talented dressmaker who made most of my clothes and my sisters clothes as well as a many for herself. I soon got involved with making my clothes, I loved the whole experience of picking out fabrics, trims and a pattern to create a new outfit, then going home to make a new garment or outfit. When it came to leaving school I visited a careers advisor who asked what I wanted to do next. My answer was ..Sew! Read more...
