Have you ever been nervous about tackling stretchy jersey fabrics because you’re afraid they’ll pucker or come out uneven? Been there!

Sewing jersey fabric with an overlocker can feel intimidating at first, but with the right pointers, you’ll soon be stitching up comfy sweatshirts and activewear with confidence.

In this YouTube overlocker video tutorial, you’ll discover essential tips for sewing jersey fabric with an overlocker. If you’ve been curious about how to handle these stretchy fabrics or what adjustments you need to make, this video is for you.

Why Use an Overlocker for Jersey Fabric?

Using an overlocker (commonly called a serger in the US) offers clean, professional edges and plenty of stretch. That’s exactly what you need when sewing T-shirts, leggings, or anything that needs a bit of give. Unlike a regular sewing machine, an overlocker trims and finishes the seam at the same time, which saves you time and keeps the fabric from fraying.

Key Tips from the Overlocker Tutorial Video

  • Start slow: It’s tempting to zoom through seams, but taking it easy ensures a neat finish and gives you time to adjust your fabric.
  • Test your stitches: Always try out your tension settings on a scrap of jersey first. Every fabric behaves differently, so a quick test prevents surprises mid-project.
  • Support your fabric: Gently guide the fabric into the overlocker – let the machine do the work, but keep the fabric level and straight.
  • Stretch is your friend: Jersey stretches, so learn to handle it without tugging too hard or distorting the shape of your garment. A little practice goes a long way.
  • Check your needles: Using the correct needles designed for stretch fabrics helps avoid skipped stitches and keeps the sewing process smooth.

Building Overlocker Confidence

If you’ve been hesitant to try sewing jersey with an overlocker because you’re worried about mistakes or messing up the fabric, remember that practice is part of the process. Each seam you sew is a chance to learn and improve, and the overlocker is there to make your life easier once you’re comfortable with it.
