Introducing the Compton trouser pattern.

I’m so excited to share that my latest pattern—the Compton Trousers—is on its way! Currently in the testing stage, the pattern is due for release at the end of the month. Let me tell you a little more about it.

The Compton Trousers are a style I developed and have been wearing for some time. They’ve caught the eye of many customers during my sewing classes, and after lots of interest and lovely comments, I decided it was time to share the pattern with you.

The Compton trousers are an easy, pull-on style featuring an elasticated waistband and deep front pleats for a relaxed yet flattering fit. Designed to sit at ankle length with a gently tapered leg, they nod to the barrel-leg or “Bob” trouser trend, while remaining classic enough to stand the test of time.

Deep side pockets add everyday practicality, making them a versatile wardrobe staple. The Compton Trousers can be made in a wide range of fabrics—from lightweight cotton poplin or lawn for a breezy, travel-friendly summer pair, to medium-weight denim for a more structured option that transitions effortlessly through the seasons.

The pattern is named after Claire Compton, a lovely member of my sewing community who first joined on a complete beginners course a couple of years ago. Claire has since continued to attend classes regularly, and she was the very first person to make the Compton Trousers during their early development.

Claire brings such a positive, grounded attitude to learning—never afraid of a challenge and always seeing mistakes as part of the process. Her brilliant sense of humour and thoughtful presence make her a joy to have in the group.

Claire’s motivation to learn to sew came from a deeply personal place, which she has kindly allowed me to share. After undergoing breast cancer surgery, she wanted to make clothes that fit and felt right for her body. Her story is a powerful reminder of how sewing can be more than a hobby—it can be a way of reclaiming confidence, comfort, and joy.

To mark the launch of the Compton Trousers, Claire has generously pledged to donate £1 from every pattern sold in the specified time scale to breast cancer now. I’ll be matching her donation—together, we hope to support the vital work that helps so many people and families.

Stay tuned for the official release later this month. I can’t wait to see how you make the Compton Trousers your own.

I was about 6 or 7 years old when I had my first go on a sewing machine, it was an old hand crank machine that my mum used with her patients, she was an occupational therapist. I still vividly remember watching with amazement as the tiny perfectly formed stitches were created as I turned the handle. I Grew up in the 70’s and 80’s when buying clothes was less affordable and dressmaking was an answer to updating your wardrobe more regularly. My own mother was a talented dressmaker who made most of my clothes and my sisters clothes as well as a many for herself. I soon got involved with making my clothes, I loved the whole experience of picking out fabrics, trims and a pattern to create a new outfit, then going home to make a new garment or outfit. When it came to leaving school I visited a careers advisor who asked what I wanted to do next. My answer was ..Sew! Read more...
